The depersonalization of the character

Abstract

This article examines the social persona and the theatrical character, as well as the articulation between them. It challenges the traditional view of the theatrical character as a mimesis of an individual. It highlights the importance of considering the dual nature inherent in the general concept of a "character"—as both a person and a character—and the resulting complexity involved in discussing theatrical characters and their implications for an actor’s work, which encompasses the interplay between the social persona, the "other," and the character being portrayed.
