Abstract

This text addresses the subject of character construction, distinguishing between the character as it exists in literature—utilizing the resources inherent to that artistic discipline—and its creation within a staged performance, which brings to it characteristics derived from the specific domain of acting. In this sense, the character becomes a "sign-symptom" through the actor’s labor, via a structured technical process in which "poetic action" plays a substantial role.
