Abstract

It has been argued that the essence of ancient tragedy lies in that passage of the *Iliad* stating that the gods have ordained a terrible fate for us so that future generations might have something to sing about; and that, by contrast, the essence of modern tragedy is found in Hölderlin’s line—"what remains is established by poets"—which for many inaugurates modern thought regarding the death of God. The role of this illustrious protagonist distinguishes the two definitions: in Homer’s verse, God is a monstrous playwright; in Hölderlin’s, He is a dead author—or, more precisely, an actor who has made his exit: a deserter.
